Santanu Chatterjee, 1965EE - A passionate alumnus
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
We are very deeply sorry to inform you the untimely death of our beloved Santanu Chatterjee, ‘65EE and one of our illustrious alumni, who passed away on Monday, 9th January 2012.
Santanu (da) had been one of the most enthusiastic alumni for bringing together BEC/BECDU/ BESU ex-students fraternity and was secretary of the Bengal Engineering College Alumni Association for a long time prior to the formation of Global Alumni Association of Bengal Engineering and Science University (GAABESU). He had contributed enormously for the establishment of GAABESU and was instrumental in getting GAABESU registered as a body. He almost single handedly prepared the original Memorandum of Understanding of the Association (MOU) which is the constitution of GAABESU and was one of the signatories of the MOU. He had actively participated during the formative days of the organization and had enthusiastically participated in organizing the 150th celebration of our Alma Mater. In addition, he assisted from behind the scene in getting the administrative support from various departments, while efforts were underway for the Alma mater to become a full-fledged university.
Santanu (da) was an excellent student and was one of the JBNSTS scholars. He was accepted in both BE College and IIT-Khragpur but decided to join BE College for its reputation at that time. During his college days, he was also involved in extra-curricular activities and was elected President of Bengal Engineering College Students’ Union (BECSU) in his final year at BE College. It should be mentioned that the students’ union at that time was non-partisan. After graduating from BE College, he joined CESC. He was selected by the CESC for his academic credentials and extra-curricular activities. With his sharp mind, hard work and unparalled ability to do multiple tasks, he had ultimately become its Executive Director. After his retirement from CESC, he worked as a Director of a well-known civil engineering construction company till his death.
We all pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul. We convey our condolence and empathy to his wife, Dr. Amita Chatterjee (first vice chancellor of the newly formed Presidency University ) and other members of his family.

I like the information- B E college union was non partisan and had no political colour. It's unfortunate that in our time we saw a different picture altogether. Why was that transformation from being non political to political has been a mystery to me always.

Santanu was one of those rare, witty, intelligent type that become campus celebrity almost overnight. He was unassuming and gifted with quick thinking and fast delivery. A great organizer, even in those pre-internet era days he came up with the idea and formed an international community of students called‘NEXUS’ based solely on letter based communication. There was never a dull moment when he was around. He will be remembered and admired for long time by anyone who came in contact.

Santanu was my batchmate in Presidency College ( 1959 - 1961) & B.E.College (1961-1965). I really feel devastated at his sad demise . He was a great organizer and I sincerely expected that he will contribute for long. May his soul rest in eternal delight and peace.

I knew Santanu when he joined CESC. We worked together for a few years sometimes in the middle of the night doing fault locations in the city or in Howrah or far away from the city. Santanu was always cheerful, bringing roadside tea in the middle of the night and making fun so that work became easy. He had a brilliant mind and a sharp wit. I met him again when he was an Executive Director. He was the same person, always extremely intelligent, witty and cheerful. my condolences to his family.

(In Loving Memory of Santanu-da)
By Hillol Ray. 1973 CE
Today, we float our broken hearts immersed in dew moistened tear -
To display our affections for you, Santanu-da, without any fear.
You will shine like a "Rising Sun" of the far East,
So bright, so gentle, and so polite to say the least !
Aspects of your illustrious life are too genuine and straight,
And they’ll remind us your contributions
even after the "sunset" !!

What a devastating news! Country just lost a Genious Engineering Executive in every sense. All of us in 1982 EE remember the classes he took for the power distribution; what an eloquence, depth and articulation! We were all in a state of awe- we also remembered Dr Sen beaming with pride while introducing his favorite student Santunu da. Santunu da instantly became a role model. We also "nick-named" him "Jitendra" for his penchant for wearing white pants those days. 68 years is no age at all.
