BECAA-Oman Annual Function &

Maiden Visit of Vice Chancellor in Muscat

By: Shuvendu Bakshi ('91Arch) & Rajdeep Dutta ('88EE)

The alumni of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in Kolkata, India, lived up to their promise of providing a memorable evening of showcasing excellence in performing arts of India, specific to Bengal, when they presented Mamata Shankar and her troupe at the Oman Auditorium on the evening of 5th November 2009. It was truly a superlative performance reflecting unison of moods, movement and melody.  The evening was made enchanting by a riot of colors and sound.

The ambassador of India to Oman H.E Anil Wadhwa, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, congratulated the BESU alumni for hosting programme of such excellence every year with self motivation and commitment to culturally integrate Indian community in Oman. He personally met and greeted Mamata Shankar & her troupe members. He welcomed VC of BESU and indicated this maiden visit will open up doors to lot of untapped opportunities of collaboration between India & Oman in education, human resource development, engineering & research.

Honorable Vice Chancellor of BESU - Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray - who was specially invited to Muscat (capital city of Oman) to grace this celebration, said that he felt proud of the fact that the alumni of BESU have played a great role in making a dream happen to transform a desert into a happening nation with the grand architectural and civil engineering marvel to the development of core engineering which is so important to ensure the growth of Petroleum and associated industries in this country, or even in the advancement of education in Muscat.

The tremendous effects of the lighting, especially the use of ultraviolet light, was a master stroke by Ratul Shankar Ghosh (son of Mamata Shankar & Chandrodoy Ghosh) aptly supported by the expertise, experience & resources of a local company in Muscat engaged for this show named: Talentz.

There was rhythm and style, there were costumes and beats. And there were graceful & talented young women and men dancing. These people created poetry with their movements.  The show had been conceived through vivid imagination and executed through strong discipline and professionalism.

As a well known musician of Muscat puts it – “I cannot recall having witnessed in the past 20 years a show which is even close to this one in terms of innovation, perfection and mass appeal.” The show was presented to a packed house and people remained glued to their seats till the end. The concept of "Amritasya Putra" was based on human evolution process with spiritual content, blended with the legacy of the dance form of Uday Shankar, the great master of Indian contemporary dance. The dance programme was compared by Chandrodoy Ghosh.

The organizing committee of BESU alumni in Oman consisted of Jayanta Mitra (65 EE), Soumitra Chatterjee (82 Arch), Soumya Dasgupta (84 Arch), Debjani Chatterjee (85 ETC), Rajdeep Dutta (88 EE), Shuvendu Bakshi (91 Arch), Tapas Chakraborty (93 Arch), Swapan Deb (94 EE), Ayananta Bhattacharya (94 ME), Sudip Thakur (98 Arch) and Soumendra Nath Paul (99 CE). Their spouses too had been very cooperative and contributed in every possible way. The committee sends out their heartfelt gratitude to all the well wishers who contributed to make the programme so successful.

BESU alumni will have a challenging task ahead of them to live up to the expectations of the guest audiences of three consecutive programmes since 2007 and produce something better in the next annual event. The standards set by them for such programmes are really high and the cultural enthusiasts of Muscat wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors.

On 6th November 2009 BECAA-Oman organized a private ceremony to felicitate Mamata Shankar & her troupe and Prof Ajoy Kumar Ray in presence of all BECAA-Oman members and their family. The dignitaries presented with flower bouquet & gifts and shared few words with the alumni of BESU/BEC & their family. Post lunch a group photograph was taken to keep this event in the treasured memory of all participants.

On 7th November as part of his itinerary, Prof. Ray had visited Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat (www.squ.edu.om), which is the most prestigious national university in Oman. He was hosted by Prof. Dipak Chaudhuri (68 ME), currently a Dept. Head in SQU. VC had initiated talks with Dy. VC of SQU (VC of SQU was on official tour abroad) for research collaboration and student exchange between the two universities, which was welcomed by SQU. It is agreed to set up an interface committee consisting of several HODs of both institute to identify the areas of active interaction between SQU & BESU in near future.

Hence the beginning of another era of alma mater of BEC alumni in Oman, flagged off by the maiden visit of VC of BESU. On the other hand a history is made and will be a model to the future generations all over the globe, irrespective of the chosen country of residence by the BEC alumni concerned.

This was our ( spouse included ) first year with BESU-Oman chapter. The annual celebration of 5th & 6th Nov 2009 will be cherished / remembered by us forever.
As a BESU Alumnus ( EE 1980 ), I felt that our Alumni is not only keeping the Knowledge-Based platform visible out here but also hoisting the Cultural-Flag of our country especially that of Bengal higher & higher. I am extremely proud to be a member of this active BESU community and would continue to participate & support all such initiatives taken from time to time.
Keep it up! Global BESU included!
Cheers!
